At the Palais Galliera - Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris
Through to March 16th, 2025.
British creator Stephen Jones was born in 1957, and it was in the 1980s that he presented his first hat collections. His brilliance gave him the opportunity to collaborate with the biggest names on Paris’ haute couture scene, contributing to
their iconic collections. As a creator, he is both quintessentially British and indelibly French.
The connection between the artist and French couture is showcased by the Palais Galliera in its exhibition Stephen Jones, Chapeaux d’Artiste (Stephen Jones: Hats by an Artist). More than 170 of the 400 items on show are the designer’s hats, including catwalk models, preparatory sketches, photos, archive material and full outfits complete with a hat. These masterpieces are presented within a beautifully designed exhibition which allows visitors to get up close to the creations and features some
spectacular special eff ects. The project is like no other, in that it represents the first time the Musée de la Mode de Paris has devoted an entire exhibition to a single accessory, here in the form of the hat.
Is a silhouette complete without a hat? Jones’ hats are absolutely essential to haute couture garments, having added an elegant, daring and creative touch to work by Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and many more as they have striven to capture the essence of Parisian women’s style. Sometimes simple, sometimes extravagant, Jones’ creations have been worn by pop stars from Boy George to Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Grace Jones and celebrities including Diana, Princess of Wales. As the first British designer to make headwear and hats for Dior, over a near 30-year period he has become the guarantor and keeper of the illustrious company’s skills. Jones presents his own collections alongside his collaborative work, which stand as testament to an exceptional and prolific career.
Don’t miss your chance to discover (or rediscover) the most French of British designers at the Palais Galliera and his expert skills which have helped to shape fashion history. No mere accessory, hats are really a kind of sculpture and works of art in their own right.
